Shark Watching Shark Watching Shark Watching

Sharks are perhaps the most misunderstood of marine animals. Often portrayed as bloodthirsty, evil killers, in reality sharks should be far more afraid of humans than vice versa While people routinely kill sharks for pleasure and profit, shark aggression toward human! is rare, and unprovoked attacks on divers are almost unheard of. Fortunately, attitudes toward sharks are slowly changing. At least among divers, fear and loathing has largely, been replaced by curiosity about these magnificent predators. Many divers even go out of their way to dive with sharks.

To observe sharks at close range usually requires luring the animals with bait. The popularity of "shark attraction" programs attests to the excitement and appeal of such dives. Whether it is a good idea to offer food to sharks or other marine life, however, is the subject of much debate.

Feeding marine animals certainly alters their natural behavior. Though it allows closer observation of otherwise shy species, it typically causes them to lose their fear of humans, in some cas_s resulting in aggressive behavior. While most shark attraction programs have excellent safety records, dangerous. shark behavior may be encouraged by such activities.

Although several species of sharks are found throughout Thailand's diving areas, perhaps the best place to observe these animals is Silvertip Bank. One of the first things divers notice about the silvertip sharks, aside from their obvious power and beauty, is that they are not exactly shy. Frequently, these large predators swim right up to divers, perhaps circle a time or two, then meander on their way down the reef. On other occasions, they may stick around for an entire dive, mostly patrolling in the distance, but periodically moving in for a closer look. Part of this is natural behavior; silvertips are known to be .rather bold and curious sharks. However, these animals have also been influenced by years of feeding by dive operators.

Nowadays, even when food is not offered, the silvertips at the Banks tend to approach divers regularly and closely, providing great opportunities for observation and photography. Accordingly, most boats that visit the Banks do not feed the sharks, since it no longer seems necessary.
The debate over the wisdom of attracting sharks is not likely to be settled anytime soon. One thing is certain: Shark feeding is not something that should be attempted by non- professionals-do not be-tempted to try it yourself! In the meantime, if you do see a shark, remember to savor the experience. Those of us who get to see these magnificent,' threatene_ 'predators in their naturai environment are indeed privileged.
